EBLI Supporter of the Week: Kathy Kujat
Kathy’s journey with OOPRC and EBLI can only be attributed to the assistance of a higher power. When her son Joe was in second grade he began to struggle with reading. Over the next 2 years he was placed in numerous special reading programs. However, by the time fourth grade rolled around, Joe told Kathy that he felt like the dumbest kid in class. She went into his classroom the week after school started to observe. Seeing the desperation he experienced in school made Kathy so heartbroken that she had to leave. She got in her car with tears streaming down her face. After driving without destination, Kathy ended up in the parking lot of Ounce of Prevention Reading Center, having never heard of it before.
Kathy brought Joe for 1-0n-1 sessions at the Center, and after 18 hours of instruction he was reading at grade level for the first time! She became so impassioned about EBLI that she sent her story and a copy of The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read to Joe’s teachers, administrators in the district, and every political leader she could think of. Last year, when EBLI was featured by the 50 in 52 Journey Institute, Kathy told her story on video. Kathy, you are an amazing parent and advocate of children – thank you so much for everything you have done!
“We need to enable our kids. We need to give them back the tools they need to decode our language. Our society depends on it.” – Kathy
